Two people died and seven were injured early Sunday in a head-on vehicle crash in Wharton Township.

The crash, which involved two vehicles, happened just before 5:30 a.m., said state police and Fayette EMS Chief Rick Adobato.

Troopers said the two vehicles collided head-on when one crossed over the center line of Route 40 near the intersection with Hawes Road. The driver and a passenger of the vehicle that crossed the center line were killed, police said.

One patient died at the scene, and another died en route to a hospital via helicopter. Two other patients were transported to Uniontown by ambulance, and five were flown to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown Adobato said. Seven Fayette EMS ambulances, a paramedic supervisor and three medical helicopters responded. The helicopters landed near the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.

Adobato said the crash “strained our resources,” but the crews responded well.

“The volunteer firemen in particular went above and beyond,” Adobato said. “They were awesome.”

Troopers said all of the occupants in both vehicles were foreign national citizens and no one spoke English. Investigators enlisted the help of interpreters. No identities of those involved in the crash were released by state police.
