PennDOT shares driver tips during solar eclipse

PennDOT has released an informational guide for those on the road during the eclipse.
Drivers are asked to plan ahead before their trip. Officials recommended travelers select a preferred viewing location before the eclipse hits, but be prepared to change course based on traffic congestion. Visitors should also plan to stay in place after the total eclipse and pack an emergency kit with needed medicines, water and snacks.
The path of the eclipse is expected to impact Pennsylvania beginning around 2 p.m. and reaching totality around 3:20 p.m.
PennDOT said drivers will need to turn on their headlights as the sky gets darker, and not rely on their vehicle’s running lights. The department posted on X saying drivers should treat the eclipse as if “dusk is approaching.”

The department also recommends using proper eyewear such as eclipse glasses while observing the event, but drivers should never operate their vehicles while wearing them. People who want to see the eclipse while traveling are reminded not to park on interstates or highways. They should find a safe spot to stop and enjoy the spectacle.
Pennsylvania State Police will remove any disabled vehicles from interstates. Troopers will also be stationed at exits to keep traffic flowing.
