Murrysville and McCandless are among the top 50 safest cities in the U.S., according to the latest rankings from home security and safety advisory company SafeWise.
Pennsylvania makes the list several times, with seven towns among SafeWise’s top 50 including Buckingham Township (11), Upper Saucon Township (27), Upper Allen Township (30), Murrysville (41), McCandless (44) and Towamencin Township (47).
The “100 Safest Cities in America” rankings are based primarily on FBI crime statistics and U.S. Census population data. Cities with more than 15,000 residents are ranked.
Murrysville has a violent crime rate of 0.4 incidents per 1,000 people, according to FBI statistics from 2018, the most current complete year used for rankings by SafeWise.
Murrysville Police Chief Tom Seefeld said earning such a ranking begins with a dedicated police force.
“Our officers do their best for the community and try to provide the best possible service,” Seefeld said. “I think it’s a couple things: one, our proactive patrols have helped. We’re out there and we’re visible. And two, I think our social media and communication with the public has helped. Our guys are out there talking with people regularly.”
That visibility, Seefeld said, had helped in several ways.
“I think one thing that’s gotten better is residents calling immediately when something happens,” he said. “When they wait, that makes it much more difficult for our officers to investigate an incident.”
In addition, Murrysville is one of 120 departments in the state to receive accreditation from the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation program, the 35th department to do so, in 2006. The program helps departments evaluate and improve their overall performance.
In neighboring Allegheny County, McCandless — just a few spots down the list at No. 44 — has the same violent crime rate.
America’s safest city, according to SafeWise’s rankings, is not that far away: Broadview Heights, Ohio, just south of Cleveland, was placed in the top spot on the list.
SafeWise officials also added property crime as an additional factor in ranking for 2020.
The company has also published a list of the 20 safest cities in Pennsylvania, which includes towns with a population below 15,000. Fox Chapel (9), South Park (10), Kiskiminetas Township (14), Franklin Park (20) and Indiana (17) made the list.
