If you’re going to grin and bear it while filling up the gas tank, you might as well get a chance at free gas while doing it.

Altoona-based Sheetz announced a contest Monday in which one customer can win a grand prize of free gas for life, while six others will win free gas for a year.

Up to 700 customers will win a $500 Sheetz gift card.

The number of free-gas-for-a-year prizes corresponds to the number of states in which Sheetz operates, while the number of gift cards reflects the company’s number of stores.

According to Sheetz, the contest will run through Aug. 31 at all Sheetz locations that offer gas. Customers will have to be a member of My Sheetz Rewardz and opt-in to the sweepstakes through the My Sheetz App, e-mail, in store or through a prompt on the pump while filling up.

Customers will get one more entry per gallon of gas pumped when using an associated My Sheetz Rewardz account. Customers also can redeem 100 “Loyalty Pointz” for an entry.

Customers will be able to track their number of entries on their receipts.

Official rules for the contest are available at sheetzfreegas4life.com.

Sheetz’s announcement comes at the same time price-tracking service GasBuddy says gasoline prices over most of the country have been falling for three straight weeks.

According to GasBuddy, the national average Monday was $3.50, down about 8 cents from last week. The average in the Pittsburgh area is $3.79 per gallon, down about 1.5 cents from last week.

Falling prices are thanks to oil prices holding near recent lows and the change to summer gas being basically complete, said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.
