If predictions hold, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens could kick off Saturday’s game in a snowstorm at M&T Bank Stadium.
Western Pennsylvania may see some snow — or a nasty wintry mix with rain in some areas — as well.
The 4:30 p.m. Steelers game Saturday coincides with a weather system expected to hit eastern states like Pennsylvania and Maryland this weekend.
Meteorologist John Darnley at the National Weather Service in Moon Township said rain and snow are expected Saturday afternoon in Western Pennsylvania. In Baltimore, there could “pretty easily” be 2 inches of snowfall during the game.
“It could be ugly for the game,” he said. “Game time is definitely going to be interesting.”
Because Pittsburgh is expected to be on the edge of the storm zone, the city probably won’t see more than an inch, Darnley said.
Areas east and south of Pittsburgh could see 3 inches — with as much as 6 inches in higher elevations, according to Darnley.
Westmoreland County’s areas of higher elevation could see up to 4 inches as well, he said.
Precipitation will begin between noon to 1 p.m. Saturday in Pittsburgh and the surrounding region, and temperatures will go from 31 degrees in the morning to up to around 38 around noon, he said.
It will start as rain and then turn over to snow at around 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, according to Darnley. Cloudy, light snow could continue through Sunday morning.
Temperatures will hit 35 or 36 degrees into Monday, he said.
Normally at this time of year, Darnley said, the Pittsburgh area would see lows of 16 to 19 degrees.
“We’re just not seeing that,” he said.
It’s in part due to the El Nino effect bringing in dry weather and mild temperatures, which caused 2023 to be on track for the second-least snowy year on record for Pittsburgh since 1880.
