U.S. Marshals on Wednesday arrested a man wanted on charges of selling drugs that resulted in an overdose death in Washington County, officials said.

Sherman Springer, known as “Detroit Shawn,” 48, had been on the run as a fugitive for more than seven months, since he was charged in late June in connection to the death of another person on April 15 in the city of Washington, court records show. He now is being held on $150,000 bail at Washington County Prison.

Officials did not disclose the name of the person who died after taking narcotics sold by Springer.

After learning that Springer was staying in the Monongahela area, authorities with the U.S. Marshals Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force and Washington County Sheriff’s Department found Springer and took him into custody at a location on Greenridge Drive.

Officers “apprehended Springer without incident,” Chief Deputy US. Marshal Phil Cornelious said in a statement.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 10 before Magisterial District Judge Robert Redlinger, records show.

Cornelious said the arrest marked the “culmination of extensive cooperative investigative efforts” between the federal task force and local authorities, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, Washington County Drug Task Force, Washington County District Attorney’s Office and Monongahela police.

The federal fugitive task force — among eight regional and 85 local bodies nationwide — also cooperates with from police from Pittsburgh, state police, the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole and sheriff’s deputies from Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. It focuses on fugitives charged with violent crimes, drug charges, sexual offenses and other serious felonies.

Officials asked anyone with information about fugitives to reach out directly to the U.S. Marshal’s service, which can be accessed online at USMarshals.gov/tips/ or via the USMS Tips phone app available on Apple and Android devices. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
