Washington County sheriff’s deputy Cpl. Chad Beattie died on Wednesday after suffering a cardiac event on duty.

At around 1:45 p.m., the sheriff’s office fugitive team assisted South Strabane Township Police in a foot pursuit of a wanted suspect in the township’s Target.

After the incident, Beattie returned to a patrol vehicle and suffered a cardiac event, according to the sheriff’s office. The 45-year-old was taken to Washington Hospital, where he later died.

“The entire Washington County sheriff’s office expresses its deepest sympathies to Cpl. Beattie’s family and friends on their loss and mourns the loss of a friend and colleague,” the office said in a statement.

Beattie began serving in the sheriff’s office in 2002. He recently received the rank of corporal, his obituary says.

A lifelong resident of Washington County, Beattie is survived by his son, Austin Beattie, and parents, James and Cynthia Beattie.

Two visitations at McGuffey High School will take place from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday.

A funeral service will directly follow the second visitation. Beattie will be buried at Claysville Cemetery.
