Steelers lose postseason bid
The Pittsburgh Steelers lost their final regular-season game to the Baltimore Ravens, capping off a disappointing season in which the team failed to grab a postseason bid for the second consecutive season.
Fans have already turned their sights to next season and are pinning hopes on the healthy return of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, among other key players.
Fundraising for East Deer fire victims
Fundraising efforts continued for an East Deer family of six left homeless after a fire. The Red Cross assisted the family after their Freeport Road home was destroyed, with donations being accepted online and at the East Deer police/fire station.
Pittsburgh City Council honors/roasts outgoing Darlene Harris
Pittsburgh City Council proclaimed Dec. 30 Darlene Harris Day, despite an ongoing investigation that the departing councilwoman stole several items gifted to the city. Council honored Harris, its longest serving member, for more than a decade of service.
Westmoreland Mall sees two more stores leave
Westmoreland Mall will be without two stores heading into the new year. PacSun, a clothing store for teens, posted signs it will close soon. It joins The Kitchen Collection, which closed in December.
Allegheny County executive enters 3rd and final term
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald was sworn into his third and final term during a ceremony at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum on Jan. 2.
He said his goals include projects to alleviate congestion on the region’s major roadways, improving access to Pittsburgh International Airport and supporting the Allegheny County Port Authority Bus Rapid Transit project, which would connect Pittsburgh’s Downtown and Oakland neighborhoods.
