A woman from a Washington County apartment building died Sunday after a fire swept through the building days earlier, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office reported.

Frances Venen, 78, of Washington County, died at an area hospital about 10 a.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner’s office. A cause of death was not released.

She was among six people taken to area hospitals for treatment when nearly 100 people were evacuated during the fire Thursday at the Thomas Campbell Apartments on Beech Street in South Strabane, according to the Observer-Reporter.

South Strabane Fire Chief Scott Reese told the newspaper that the blaze began in a kitchen.

Firefighters arrived to find residents screaming from balconies for help, South Strabane Fire Chief Scott Reese told Tribune-Review news partner WPXI-TV. Some residents were elderly and using wheelchairs.

Several people were not able to return to their apartments because of fire and water damage, according to the Observer-Reporter.

The Salvation Army and Red Cross were providing help.
