One person was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon following a multiple-vehicle crash that shut down part of state Route 28 and left some rush-hour commuters sitting in traffic for an hour, authorities said.

The crash occurred on Route 28’s southbound lanes near the 40th Street Bridge in Pittsburgh, according to Allegheny County 911.

Around 4 p.m., officials closed the southbound lanes of Route 28 between the 31st Street and 40th Street Bridges, said Steve Cowan, a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

By 5 p.m., a live feed from a state-operated traffic camera on a Millvale church near the 40th Street Bridge showed vehicles driving in the southbound lanes.

The extent of injuries from the crash was unclear.

Allegheny County officials deferred additional questions to Pennsylvania State Police and Pittsburgh police.

A Pittsburgh police spokeswoman, however, said the crash is “outside our jurisdiction.”

Cowan, as well as representatives from state police’s Troop D, which patrols parts of Route 28, and police officials in Harrisburg, did not return phone calls seeking comment.
