District budget
Quaker Valley School District’s final 2025-26 budget is expected to be discussed and voted on May 19.
The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at Edgeworth Elementary School, 200 Meadow Lane.
An agenda will be posted closer to the meeting date on the district’s website, qvsd.org.
State law requires school districts to approve a balanced budget by the end of June.
Library activity planned
Sewickley Public Library will host a Sahaja meditation session from 11 a.m. to noon May 24 at 500 Thorn St.

Pedal with Police
Quaker Valley School District and the Sewickley Police Department present Pedal With Police May 17.
Check-in is at 9 a.m. with the ride starting at 10 a.m.
The ride will be from Osborne Elementary School to Edgeworth Elementary, escorted by police.
Activities after the ride include a blessing of the bikes, bike safety inspections, helmet giveaway, obstacle course and more.

SMC Club
SMC Club, an affiliate of the Sewickley Valley YMCA, will feature guitarist/singer Mark DeMeno on May 16. There will be no meeting on May 23. On May 30, historian Bob Ferguson will discuss the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 during the Hundred Years’ War. Dig: An Evening of Jazz in the Garden
Pittsburgh Botanic Garden is hosting its fourth annual Dig: An Evening of Jazz in the Garden on June 12. The evening features an electrifying concert with the musical stylings of Benny Benack III and Benny Benack II, accompanied by Grace Elliott, Tyler Bullock, George Heid III and Caleb Tobocman. Dig promises to be an enchanting experience that brings together the best of live music and the beauty of Pittsburgh Botanic Garden. The concert will be held under the tent in the Peirce Celebration Garden, with food and beverages available for purchase.

Compost available
Edgeworth borough officials remind residents that there is plenty of leaf compost available for summer gardens and yards.
Call the borough office at 412-741-2866 to be placed on a delivery list.
Delivery may take up to two weeks, depending on public works availability.
Offices closed
Sewickley borough offices will be closed on May 26 in observance of Memorial Day.
Library party
Sewickley Public Library will host a Family Block Party from 9 a.m. to noon May 17 at 500 Thorn St.
The free program is available for children ages birth to 6 years old and their parents/caregivers.
Play, build, read and learn together with blocks. Registration is not required.

Hard-to-recycle event
The Pennsylvania Resources Council is kicking off its 2025 hard-to-recycle collections in Allegheny County with an event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 17 in North Park.
Participants must register in advance at prc.org/CollectionEvents or by calling 412-488-7490.
There is a $5 participation fee to drop off unlimited cellphones, home phones, computer towers and peripheral equipment such as keyboards, laptops, mice, etc. Also accepted will be expanded polystyrene packaging material, microwave ovens, video game consoles and DVD players.
For an additional fee, people can recycle televisions, computer monitors, printers, fluorescent tubes, small Freon appliances and tires (with and without rims). Visit PRC’s website at prc.org for a complete price list.
Fern Hollow Nature Center
On select Mondays this spring and summer, Fern Hollow Nature Center is inviting children 5 and younger with their caregivers to explore local parks with educator Kara O’Neill.
The hourlong Nature and Nurture programs include a short kid-friendly hike, a nature-themed story and a simple craft. Hikes are scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. May 19, June 23, July 28 and Aug. 18. Locations vary.
Designed to foster a love for the outdoors, Nature Night Out programs are offered on select Fridays at Fern Hollow Nature Center. Pennsylvania Master Naturalist Kristen Haas ensures that each session has the perfect blend of instruction, exploration, discovery and free play. The drop-off program is for children ages 5 to 10 and occurs on from 6 to 9 p.m. May 23, June 27, July 25 and Aug. 29.

Marek recognized
Sewickley Heights council unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing Jeff Marek for his 45 years of service to the borough on April 21.
He recently retired as the borough’s road foreman for the public works department.
Borough manager Nathan Briggs said Marek was a very dedicated worker who knew all the residents.
Marek was the first one on the roads during winter maintenance and the last one off, Briggs said.
In February, council hired Marek’s replacement, Nick Pascarella, as director of public works.
Pascarella’s salary is $70,000.
The council also voted on April 21 to hire Michael Kohl as a parks and public works department laborer with an annual salary of $42,000.
Grant sought
Sewickley Heights officials are seeking a $54,889 grant from the Commonwealth Financing Authority for the 1901 Glen Mitchell Road sanitary sewer connection project.
The grant comes with a 15% borough match.
Borough manager Nathan Briggs said the plan is to convert an on-lot septic system to a public sanitary sewer line at the Fern Hollow Nature Center.
Total project cost is estimated at $64,575.
Briggs said they hope to get a response to the grant application in September or October.
Farmers market
The Sewickley Farmers Market runs every Saturday through November from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, at the St. James Church parking lot.
Open house
Aleppo Township VFC is holding an open house from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. May 17 at the station, 131 Weber Road in Aleppo. The community is invited to stop by and see the new equipment, meet volunteer firefighters and get fire safety information. Refreshments will be provided by Becco’s Hot Dog Cart and children’s activities will be available. For more information, visit aleppofire.org.
Board vacancies
Leetsdale needs volunteers to fill vacancies. There are two seats available on the recreation board. One term expires at the end of this year. The other expires at the end of next year.
There is a vacancy on the Edgeworth Water Authority board. Its term expires at the end of 2027.
