Folk Fridays at Sweetwater

From a culinary class explosion to a series on Eco art, Sweetwater Center for the Arts is incorporating new opportunities, like gathering for folk music, to the list of unique art forms offered at Sweetwater. Folk Fridays is a culmination of art and culture in the form of music featuring Pittsburgh’s favorite performers. Folk music favorites including Liz Berlin of Rusted Root on Feb. 17, and Jess Klein & the Good Time on Feb. 24, will perform. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Live cooking demonstrations by Andrew Alvarez will take place in Sweetwater’s kitchen from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Music begins at 7:30 p.m. Seating is first come first serve. Specialty signature cocktails inspired by the music will be served by Big Spring Spirits. Admission is $30-40 ($35 at at the door). To purchase tickets, visit sweetwaterartcenter.org.

Child Health Association 100th anniversary

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Child Health Association of Sewickley is hosting a cocktail party and benefit event, Share the Love, at Allegheny Country Club on Feb. 11 from 6 to 9 pm. Attendees will be able to fulfill wishes from seven Pittsburgh non-profits who are dedicated to enriching the lives of children. The organizations benefitting from Share the Love are Union Aid Society, Center for Hope, Light of Life, Coraopolis Youth Creations, The Woodlands, YMCA Sewickley, and The Education Partnership. Tickets to the event can still be purchased online at www.childhealthassociation.org.

Book sale

Friends of the Sewickley Public Library will host their annual winter book sale from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 10, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 11 and 1-3:30 p.m. Feb. 12 at the library, 500 Thorn St. The sale features gently used fiction and nonfiction books, children’s books, DVDs, CDs and more. Bag Day is Feb. 12. Shoppers can fill one of the provided bags with as many items as they can fit for $5. All proceeds from the sale benefit the library. Call 412-741-6920 for more information.

Kindergarten registration

Quaker Valley School District kindergarten registration for the 2023-23 school year is open online. The child must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1. Parents/guardians must include the child’s proof of age, proof of immunization and two proofs of residency from the family. Expired documents are not acceptable. Families can email the supporting documents to registration@qvsd.org. More information about the registration process, including forms, is available online at qvsd.org.

Senior Men’s Club

An affiliate of the Sewickley Valley YMCA, the Senior Men’s Club will host Joe Guffie of the Allegheny County District Attorney’s office, who will discuss fraud and scams targeting seniors on Feb. 10. On Feb. 17, Officer Pugh of Pennsylvania Fish & Game Commission will talk about the state game lands, and on Feb. 24, Todd Depastino of the Veterans Breakfast Club will talk about Mission Vietnam Veterans Tours.
