In brief: Free smoke detectors, historical society exhibit and more around Sewickley

Fire alarms
Quaker Valley area fire departments are working together to ensure that residents in the Quaker Valley School District have access to working smoke detectors with proper installation. Big Sewickley Creek VFD and Aleppo Township VFD are partnering with the American Red Cross Sound the Alarm Program. Interested residents should reach out to the fire department in the municipality that they reside in.
“Free smoke detectors, including installation, are available for senior citizens of Bell Acres Borough. We have been working in conjunction with the American Red Cross for the last few years serving the residents in our community with another layer of fire protection,” said Richard Kulbacki of Big Sewickley Creek VFD. “This year, we are also working with Aleppo Township VFD to provide this service to Aleppo Township and Sewickley Heights Borough residents.”

Sewickley Valley Historical Society
What does 50 years of collecting and preserving Sewickley history look like? Join Sewickley Valley Historical Society May 18-31 to see for yourself.
“All Out for 50” will display, in many cases for the first time, varied pieces of Sewickley Valley history from the Collections at SVHS. From paintings to prints to a WWI first aid kit, SVHS is bringing to light some of the unique and seldom-seen pieces cared for by the Society since its founding in 1973. SVHS is excited to bring this exhibition to the public in a somewhat unconventional format — the works will not be heavily curated and in most cases will be displayed with only simple labels generated from the collection’s catalog database. The goal of “All Out for 50” is not to interpret the pieces, but to get them out into the light, onto a wall or pedestal, and enjoyed by the community that has helped preserve them.
During the opening night event and SVHS hours, guests will be provided with post-it notes and writing tools and are invited to share their thoughts or memories on the pieces. SVHS will “stick” those memories in its history books – a special scrapbook will preserve the post-it recollections and comments following the exhibit, providing new, community-sourced, snippets of context to the items on display.
For this rare look into the Collections at SVHS, the Historical Society welcomes attendees to the Old Sewickley Post Office Community Room on May 18 for the opening night of the exhibition and the 2023 SVHS Annual Meeting. From May 19-31, the exhibition will be available for viewing during SVHS and Sweetwater Center for the Arts business hours.
