Hard to recycle

A hard to recycle event is planned for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 27 in Leetsdale Industrial Park at 380 Leetsdale Industrial Drive.

Cost is $5 per participant. It includes unlimited recycling of cell and home phones, computer towers and peripheral equipment, microwave ovens, stereo equipment, VCD and DVD players and more. There are additional fees for florescent tubes, printers, tires, TVs and Freon appliances.

Advanced registration is required. Call 412-488-7490 or go to prc.org/collectionevents for more information.

Volunteers wanted

Volunteers are wanted for a Keep Leet Neat spring cleanup event from 10 a.m. to noon April 20. Participants will meet at the township building at 194 Ambridge Ave. for refreshments and supplies and be sent to various parts of the township for cleaning. Call 724-266-2280 for more information.

Leaf collection

Sewickley’s spring leaf collection has begun. The borough program runs through April 19, weather permitting. Leaves are to be placed along the street and not in the street. Brush, grass and shrubbery clippings are not to be mixed with leaves. Grass and shrubbery clippings are required to be bagged for weekly garbage collection. Branches must be cut to 4-foot lengths and bundled. Waste Management, the borough’s waste collection hauler, will not pick up branches unless this is done. The borough will only pick up branches from borough trees after a storm. Leaves that are not put out for collection during this time will have to be bagged for regular waste pick up.

Links at the Library

Friends of the Sewickley Public Library are bringing a mini golf fundraiser to the library on April 19-21. Four events comprise the initiative: a teen night on Friday, family fun mini golf and grown-up putt-putt and 19th hole on Saturday (the latter is a 21 and over event), and a ladies’ brunch and put on Sunday. For more information or to sponsor the event, visit sewickleylibrary.org.

Garbage reminder

Leet officials remind township residents not to take their garbage out until at least 6 p.m. the night before pickup.

Beware of scams

Acting Leet Police Chief Brian Jameson said a resident was scammed earlier this year out of $15,000.

Someone pretended to be an attorney and said the resident’s grandson was in an accident and needed money. Officers investigated and have yet to be able to recover the money. The investigation is ongoing and the crime may be connected to an incident in another state.

Jameson said people should not give out any money without confirming what the situation is, and anyone who gets these types of calls should contact police.

Jameson said his department was contacted by a law enforcement agency in New Jersey investigating a similar situation involving scammers. No further information was released.

Police vehicle purchased

Leet commissioners approved the purchase of a 2023 Ford Explorer for the police department. The vehicle is from Laurel Auto Group in Cambria County. Cost was estimated at $38,000 and may be ready for township patrols within the next six weeks.

Clean up after your dog

Sewickley Hills officials remind dog owners who bring their pets to the borough park to clean up after their animals. Borough secretary Diana Steele said signage was recently posted in the park to help address complaints from other park users. A receptacle with plastic bags is expected to be installed later this year.

Alert registration open

Sewickley-area residents can still sign up for official borough emergency alerts. Sewickley partnered with the company to use CodeRED, a cloud-based software system that sends out messages to subscribers.

It is free to sign up for the alerts and there are multiple ways to register.

People can scan the QR code on the postcards to get to the site or text SewickleyAlerts (case sensitive) to 24639. They can also log into accountportal.onsolve.net/sewickleyalerts or fill out the information on the back of the postcards and send them to the borough office, 601 Thorn St. Residents can select how they want to receive the alert, such as text or email.

The alert system is strictly for emergencies and not all borough activities such as pancake breakfasts and festivals.

Business Connection

Greater Pittsburgh Business Connection, a referral group of business professionals, will meet at the Eat N’ Park on Route 60 in Robinson Township for breakfast from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. April 17. Speakers will be Jim Stossel of LPL Financial and Bernie Slutiak of Insurance Consultants of Pittsburgh. To attend, become a member, or for more information, visit gpbc-pgh.org or call 412-364-6446 ext. 302.

Sewickley Men’s Club

Sewickley Men’s Club, an affiliate of the Sewickley Valley YMCA, will host Andrew Pasquini of World Vision on April 12. The Tuesday Musical Club will present on April 19 and Ashley Platt of the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office will discuss the forensic library on April 26.
