Mavuno Festival
The Mavuno festival and exhibition celebrating BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) artistry and culture, is set to take place Sept. 16 at Riverfront Park. The free festival promises to be a vibrant and inclusive celebration of diverse artistic expressions for all ages and backgrounds.
Mavuno 2023 welcomes back Barrel and Flow founder and TV host Day Bracey, and will feature an array of exhibitions, shops and experiences that span various art forms, as well as food and a beer garden. Try samples of beer from participating brewers with a ticketed entry to the beer garden of $25 for attendees 21 years of age and up. Plus, live music can be heard from local artists NASH.V.ILL. and Icy Pisces.
New this year, the festival will feature special guests, The Manchester Craftsman Guild and its Guild on the Go Van and an appearance by the Pittsburgh Glass Center in its Hot Wheels mobile glass-blowing truck.
The two-day event kicks off Sept. 15 with a reception and exhibition at the Sweetwater Center for the Arts, with the festival the following day. For more information, visit sweetwaterartcenter.org.
Fern Hollow Music Festival
The 22nd Annual Fall Music Festival will be held 4-8 p.m. Sept. 9 (gates open at 3:30) at Fern Hollow Nature Center. Fun for the whole family, the Fall Music Festival will feature the S’Wearing Hats, an eight-piece band from Cranberry, that are sure to get folks dancing with their eclectic music from the ’80s and ’90s. Closing out the festival will be local favorites the Sweetwater Cottage Band, playing an upbeat mix of soul, rock and dance songs. The festival will also feature an open mic from 3:30-4:30. The festival will also offer children’s activities, including archery, ax throwing, a scavenger hunt, and more. There will be food and drinks from Aviva Brick Oven Pizza and Bar and Sewickley Confectionery. Picnics and coolers are permitted.
Tickets for the festival are $35 for adults and $15 for children 5-17 years; children under 5 years are admitted free. Fern Hollow members will receive a $5 discount on all tickets. There are also sponsorship opportunities for families that are interested in making a direct donation towards environmental education. Sponsorships include tickets to the festival, VIP parking, and VIP seating. Sponsorships start at $100. Tickets and sponsorships can be purchased in advance online at fhnc.org or by calling 412-741-6136. Limited tickets will also be available at the door.

• Sewickley Heights council will meet at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at the borough building, 238 Country Club Road.
• Glen Osborne council will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at Osborne Elementary School, 1414 Beaver St.
• Edgeworth council will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at the borough building, 301 Beaver Road.
• Leetsdale council will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at the borough building, 373 Beaver St.
• Leet commissioners will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the township office, 194 Ambridge Ave.
Library activities planned
The Friends of the Sewickley Public Library welcome all to the Fall Book Sale. Find great prices on gently-used fiction and non-fiction books, children and teen books, movies, music and more. The book sale hours are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sept. 8 and 9, and 1-3:30 p.m. Sept. 10. Sunday is Bag Day — shoppers can fill a provided bag for $5. All proceeds benefit the library.
Sewickley Public Library will have voter registration information ready from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 19 at 500 Thorn St. Get the forms and information needed to register, check your registration status or update your voter registration information. Oct. 23 is the deadline to register to vote in 2023.
The library will host a workshop on how to colorize black and white photos 1-3 p.m. Sept. 18-20 in its conference room. Artist Randall Coleman will teach participants how to digitally add color to old black and white photographs. It is a three-day program. The historical context provided in class, along with learning a new art form, offers an engaging and rewarding experience.

Ordinance to be adopted
Leet officials plan to adopt an ordinance regulating handicapped parking requests at its Sept. 11 meeting. Residents and businesses can apply for such parking spaces. Residents must provide proof of residency and show that their vehicle is registered to their address with their application. Businesses must explain the need for a handicapped space and why their current ADA parking spaces are not sufficient. Applications are subject to township manager review.

Girl Scouts recruitment night
Sewickley-area Girl Scout volunteers will present information about Glen Oaks Service Unit and answer questions about how to register your K-12 daughter, become a volunteer, or both. The event will take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Club Thaw outdoor pavilion, 174 Campmeeting Road Ext. in Leet. Girls are welcome but not required to attend this free event. Senior men’s club
An affiliate of the Sewickley Valley YMCA, the Senior Men’s Club will host Allegheny County Sheriff’s Deputy Jamie Tarar on Sept. 8. Tarar will talk about crime prevention, the fentanyl crisis and human trafficking. A representative from Duquesne Light will discuss the power grid Sept. 15, and Jonathan Kersting of the Pittsburgh Technology Council will talk about technology in the region on Sept. 22.
