In brief: Summer programs, activities and more underway in the Sewickley area

Grant sought

Sewickley council approved applying for $100,000 from the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County to help fund a pedestrian light replacement project.

Borough officials estimated that light poles are about 22 years old, and some show signs of corrosion.

The grant is projected to replace seven or eight poles.

Position filled

Sewickley council appointed Nicole Bechtold as an alternate to the Civil Service Commission.

It is for a six-year term ending Dec. 31, 2029.

Special theater events

The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center at 418 Walnut St. in Sewickley will host a special announcement ceremony from 5 to 7 p.m. on June 25.

Officials will announce the selection of a director/filmmaker to lead the production of a documentary film focused on Sewickley Valley’s Black community.

In addition to announcing the director/filmmaker, Their Story Committee leaders will discuss new developments for the project. This work builds on the book, “Their Story: The History of Black/African Americans in Sewickley & Edgeworth,” published in 2000 by late Sewickley resident Bettie Cole.

The theater, in partnership with the Penguin Bookshop, will host a book signing and discussion event from 7 to 9 p.m. on June 26.

It is for the latest novel by Marie Benedict, the pen name of Sewickley native Heather Terrell, and Victoria Christopher Murray, one of the country’s top contemporary authors.

They will be signing copies of “The First Ladies” and talk about the book focused on the extraordinary partnership between first lady Eleanor Roosevelt and civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune.

Big Spring Spirits will have cocktails for sale. Advance registration is required for this ticketed event. Admission includes a copy of the book, which will be available for pickup at the event.

Splash pad open

Leetsdale’s splash pad in Henle Park is open for the season.

Water will remain on from noon to 6 p.m. seven days a week until Labor Day.

Hours can change without notice, and the water will be off when inclement weather is expected.

Night Mart planned

Sewickley Chamber of Commerce will host Night Mart from 6 to 9 p.m. June 30 along Beaver Street between Broad and Walnut streets.

The event will feature about 30 artisan vendors, 13 food trucks and tents, live entertainment and a local craft brew pop-up.

Vendors include From the Grounds Up Coffee, Slurp-N-Burst Boba Tea, Uni Ramen Bar, Veggies N’At, Baxter and the Bear, Clementina, and Found Woodworks.

Night Marts are also planned for July 28 and Aug. 25.

Summer reading starts

Sewickley Public Library’s summer reading program has begun.

The program runs through Aug. 5.

There are various reading challenges and prizes available for kids, teens and adults throughout the program.

Registration is still available. The library is located at 500 Thorn St.

Association of University People events

The Association of University People invites singles over 50, who are four-year college graduates, to join them for activities and to meet new people. Activities include monthly dinners, social gatherings, concerts and day trips. Those interested can attend three activities as guests before joining. Senior men’s club
