Tuskegee Airmen ceremony
On Sept. 16 at 11 a.m., the Tuskegee Airmen of Western Pennsylvania is having a re-dedication ceremony of its memorial that was constructed 10 years ago at the Sewickley Cemetery, which is located a couple hundred yards up Cemetery Road. It is the largest outdoor memorial of its kind in the country, and there were more airmen from Western Pennsylvania than any other area in the U.S. Seven Sewickley area airmen are interred there in honor of their heroic service to the country in World War II and their achievements and advancements in the military’s segregation and equality of treatment for all persons in the armed services, as proclaimed in President Truman’s Executive Order 9981. Immediately following will be a short reception at the Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center. There is limited seating at the theater.
Owen Galluzzo Memorial Picnic
The Seventh Annual Owen Galluzzo Memorial Picnic and Wiffle Ball Classic will take place from noon-5 p.m. Sept. 4 at War Memorial Park in Sewickley. The family-friendly fun-filled event includes bounce houses, face painting, ice cream and hot dogs, spin art, bead stringing, a home run derby, a gigantic wiffle ball tournament, and a basket auction (70 baskets). The Owen Galluzzo Memorial Fund was created in 2014 after 9-year-old Owen Galluzzo died following open heart surgery. The mission of the Owen Galluzzo Memorial Fund is to support non-profit organizations that enrich the lives of medically fragile children like Owen was. The fund has given to two organizations that helped to make Owen feel special, Beads of Courage and Team Impact. Beads of Courage provides children with medical illnesses with glass blown beads to mark every aspect of their medical journey and to help them tell their story of bravery — Owen had hundreds of beads and was very proud of them. Team Impact is a non-profit that matches medically ill children with college sports teams. Owen was “drafted” by the University of Pittsburgh’s baseball team the spring before he died. The annual event is the sole fundraiser for this fund.
