Meetings set

• Leet commissioners will meet at 7 p.m. March 10 at the township building, 194 Ambridge Ave.

• Sewickley council will meet at 6:30 p.m. March 11 at the borough building, 601 Thorn St.

• Sewickley Hills council will meet at 7:30 p.m. March 11 at the borough building, 349 Magee Road.

• Leetsdale council will meet at 7 p.m. March 13 at the borough building, 373 Beaver St.

• Aleppo board of commissioners will meet at 7 p.m. March 17 at the township building, 100 North Drive.

• Sewickley Heights council will meet at 4:30 p.m. March 17 at the borough building, 238 Country Club Road.

• Edgeworth council will meet at 7 p.m. March 18 at the borough building, 301 Beaver Road.

• Glen Osborne council will meet at 7 p.m. March 18 at Osborne Elementary School, 1414 Beaver St.

• Quaker Valley School Board will meet at 7 p.m. March 25 at Edgeworth Elementary, 200 Meadow Lane.

Soup’s on

Leetsdale 4th of July Committee will host a soup sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 7 at the borough building, 373 Beaver St.

Offerings will include broccoli and cheese, Filipino noodles, potato bacon and creamy onion. Other menu items include haluski with spaetzles and pierogies.

Soups are $6 a pint. Deliveries are available for orders with 15 or more pints.

Pi Day

Sewickley Community Library will host a Pi Day party from 7-8 p.m. March 14 at 500 Thorn St.

People are encouraged to bring their favorite pie and swap slices with fellow pie lovers. All pies are welcome.

Property purchased

Sewickley council recently authorized the purchase of property at 860 Nevin Ave.

Borough solicitor Nate Boring said the property had been abandoned for a long time and had three different owners in the past five years.

He said owners had failed to address multiple code violations and structural issues. The borough bought the property from a trust for $85,000.

Council plans to demolish the building and use the site for stormwater management and hillside stabilization due to its proximity to a culvert and Crescent Avenue.

Personnel changes made at Quaker Valley

Quaker Valley School District officials recently approved a variety of personnel changes.

Thomas Demko will retire as computer science and technology teacher effective June 9.

Jennifer Morelli will retire as health and physical education teacher effective Aug. 1.

Substitute teacher Carly Agnew and long-term substitute English teacher Noreen Daniello both resigned from their positions. Agnew’s last day was Jan. 22. Daniello’s last day was Jan. 28.

Maria Cima was appointed as long-term substitute teacher and assigned to the middle school English Language Arts Department effective Jan. 7. Salary was prorated at $48,632.

Susan Evans was appointed as part-time class tutor and assigned to the high school World Language Department effective Feb. 28. Daily rate was set at $200.

Mara Miranda was appointed as special education access assistant teacher and assigned to Osborne Elementary effective Jan. 27. Daily rate was set at $180.

Ryan Lane was appointed as a district relief cleaner effective Feb. 10. Hourly rate was set at $20.21.

Links in the Library

Friends of the Sewickley Public Library are hosting their annual Links in the Library mini-golf fundraiser with events for everyone the weekend of April 4-6. Sessions include a teen night April 4 from 7-9 p.m., family fun mini golf April 5 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., grown up putt-putt and 19th hole 6-8:30 p.m. April 5, and a ladies brunch and putt on April 6 from 10 a.m.-noon.

Join musicians Emily Gallagher and Caleb Glickman for an enchanted afternoon of musical storytelling at The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center from 2-3 p.m. March 9. Presented by Autism Pittsburgh, the Azure Family concert features 45 minutes of live music, during which audience members are welcome to sit, stand, walk around, dance and more.

A designated quiet room will be nearby and easy to access.

After the concert, attendees may participate in an “Instrument Petting Zoo,” where they can learn more about, hold and even play instruments.

Pop-up bridge games

The Edgeworth Bridge Club is sponsoring POP-UP Bridge games on April 20 and June 29 from 2-5 p.m. The games will be hosted by The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center in the community room. All bridge players from beginners, social bridge players to spouses of players, are welcome. The games are free, as is parking on Sundays.

SMC Club

SMC Club, an affiliate of the Sewickley Valley YMCA, will feature Harry Java, who will discuss Moon Township history, on March 7. Gary Augustine will talk about Confederates in the aviary on March 14; Helena Pingree will discuss vestibular crystals on March 21. Speakers on March 28 and April 4 are TBD. On April 11, Ken Kaszak will talk about the Dutch master painter Vermeer. There will be no speaker on April 18 for Good Friday. On April 25, Dr. Ian Bulow will talk about upper cervical issues. Sweetwater opening reception

Sweetwater Center for the Arts’ second exhibition of the year, “Movin’ & Groovin’,” kicks off with an opening reception on March 7 from 5-9 p.m., free and open to the public.

There will be a special guest performance by Pittsburgh’s own DJ Dini Daddy, a soul funk, vinyl DJ disco daddy.

As Sweetwater enters its 50th year, the organization looks back to 1975 and pays homage to this time through this exhibition. The show will feature works inspired by or which display the colorful patterns, fun feel and overall playfulness which encompasses the 1970s arts and crafts.

The exhibit is curated by Lakyn Bowman, a full-time studio potter living and working in Jackson, Tenn.

Marilyn Monroe: The Girl Behind the Image

In the glittering Golden Age of Hollywood, no star shone more brightly than Marilyn Monroe. But beneath the smoke and mirrors of her legendary persona was a much different reality. Join us as we break through the myths that still exist today and discover the real Marilyn Monroe at the Sewickley Public Library on March 13 from 7-8:30 p.m.

President of Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club and film historian Wendy Whittick is all about spreading the word about classic film in the community. Besides her work with Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club, she produces and stars in an award-nominated show on YouTube called Wendy’s Classic Corner, and hosts a fun and insightful film review podcast, Silver Screen Time Machine. On top of that, she provides educational outreach presentations for libraries and the Carnegie Mellon Osher series.

Summer camps at Fern Hollow

Don’t miss out on Fern Hollow’s Summer Camps this year! Weekly sessions will run from June 9 through Aug. 15 for children ages 3 to 14. Morning, afternoon and full-day camps on subjects ranging from fishing to sustainability will be offered at Fern Hollow and new off-site locations. All camps include environmental education components, free play, exploration and nature-themed crafts and games. Teenagers (15 and older) are encouraged to apply for camp counselor volunteer positions, and resumes for college-age interns are also being accepted.

Priority registration for Summer Camp began Feb. 1 for Fern Hollow members, who also benefit from discounted rates. A month later, full-rate registration will open to members of the public. Financial aid and scholarships are available.

Woman’s Club of Sewickley Valley

The Woman’s Club of Sewickley Valley will hold a meeting on March 12 at the Allegheny Country Club. The program will be “Then and Now,” A History of the Pittsburgh Zoo.

On April 13, we will share some fun and song at the Montour Heights Country Club. Families are welcome, so bring them along! “Singing in the Spring” is presented by Sing, Sing, Sing from Wexford.

On May 13, “Gifts of the Living Earth” by author Patricia DeMarco. We will discover how to more appreciate our planet and its gifts to us.
