Winter sowing workshop
Join the Big Sewickley Creek Watershed Association and Fern Hollow Nature Center for a winter sowing workshop on Nov. 4, from 9-11 a.m. Attendees will learn about the basics of winter sowing, a simple and successful method of starting seeds in enclosed containers outdoors. This milkweed seed sowing workshop is a collaboration with Bell Acres Mayor Ken Alvania as part of the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge program. Participants can take home their own milk jug of sown native milkweed seeds to start milkweed plants in the spring to feed the monarch butterfly caterpillars.
Fern Hollow Nature Center is located at 1901 Glen Mitchell Road, Sewickley. Members of FHNC/BSCWA are $7/person; non-members: $10/person (all proceeds benefit FHNC and BSCWA). Ages 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Advance registration is strongly recommended so that enough supplies are available. All are welcome! Sign up at fhnc.org/winter-sowing-23.
Library events
Savoring Sewickley, a benefit for the Friends of the Sewickley Public Library, will be held at the library from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Nov. 5. The event will feature small plates from local restaurants and beer, wine and soft drinks in a casual atmosphere. Tickets are $100 per person and can be purchased online at savoringsewickley.com.
The Sewickley Public Library is set to host a special event highlighting and exploring the history of the 150-year-old institution at 7 p.m. Nov. 15
“We have been digging deep, scouring through our archives to document the library’s history. Some of the things we are finding are already well known, but there are also parts of our library’s history that even we didn’t know,” said Dustin Shilling, assistant director. “For example, one of our staff members left to train at the Tuskegee Institute and returned to work at the library after the war ended.”
The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion with current and former staff and board members, a Q&A session, and a chance for community members to share their stories about the library.
Cake and refreshments will be served. This is a free program, though advanced registration is suggested. Register on the library’s website at sewickleylibrary.org or by calling 412-741-6920.
