The Leetsdale parks and recreation committee has planned a new fundraiser to help harvest support for its children’s programs.

The inaugural Pumpkin Festival is slated for Oct. 6-8 at Henle Park at the corner of Beaver and Ferry streets.

Activities include pumpkin sales, arts and crafts, face painting, a corn maze and more at the event, from 4-7 p.m.

Caramel and candy apples, snow cones, corn dogs, popcorn balls and cotton candy are just some of the treats to be available for purchase.

Parks and recreation president Deb Canney said she came up with the idea as a way to help offset expenses for other family activities such as Movies in the Park and mini camps.

“I’m excited because the summer programs have been so wonderful,” Canney said. “We don’t ask anyone for money, so this is to replenish what we’ve already spent. We’re not looking to make any money on it. We’ve had a wonderful, wonderful summer.”

She estimated a few thousand dollars have been spent on children’s activities so far this year. Hundreds of youths were estimated to have participated in at least one summer parks and recreation event.

Canney and three volunteers are coming together to make the pumpkin celebration possible.

Mayor Sandra Ford said the festival has her full support.

“I love the idea,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity for our community to get together and have some fun. Also, it will help with the cost of our free lunch program for the kids.”

People who want to donate pumpkins can contact Canney at 561-596-9851.
