Municipal intern being considered for Leetsdale

A municipal intern from the Local Government Academy may be able to help Leetsdale officials get more done this summer.
Council members at the Jan. 12 meeting discussed seeking help from the nonprofit, non-partisan organization.
Council vice president Maria Napolitano said potential intern projects include helping with the borough website update, planning research and community outreach.
“I can think of a bunch of things (the intern can do),” she said. “There is a selection process. We’ll have to go out and interview in a group setting or something so it’s fair. It might be a really good thing for us for the summer — think about what we could give this person for work.”
The intern would be available about 20 hours per week for a total of 400-480 hours from May 19 through the end of August.
The LGA would cover half the cost of the internship, which was listed at $12 per hour for graduate students and $11 per hour for undergrads.
The municipal intern program is supported by the state Department of Community & Economic Development, Allegheny County and the Redevelopment Authority of the County of Washington.
Council president Patricia Lee said a Local Government Academy intern would be a welcomed asset.
“I don’t think we’ve done that before,” Lee said. “I think it’s a great idea, and if we can make it happen we’ll definitely make it happen.”
Council said the deadline to apply for the intern program is Feb. 15.
More discussion about the intern program is expected to occur at the borough’s strategy meeting 9 a.m. Feb. 4 at the borough building, 373 Beaver St.
A light continental breakfast will be provided.
Council wants to use the meeting as an opportunity to talk with residents about a variety of topics, including emergency response, borough operations, parks and recreation events and establish a calendar for future projects.
“The meeting is very important so that we are all as well-informed as possible for everything occurring throughout the year,” Lee said. “Input from residents is very important. We have a diverse community and we would appreciate their perspective, their feedback and their insight.”
