Osborne Elementary hosted its annual frozen fundraising dance on Feb. 21.

The Polar Ball started in 2018 with second grade students raising a little more than $1,500 for Quaker Valley families.

Students raised about $5,000 this year to assist students in their community.

Proceeds go toward Osborne’s Roomful of Heart program, which helps needy families during the holiday season.

Second grade students learn about the importance of service-learning projects throughout the school year.

They start the year by growing vegetables in tower gardens in the building that are later donated to local food banks.

Other lessons include how fulfilling basic needs can sometimes be difficult and about how there are various ways they can help people. They build upon this idea when they learn how a community event, or fundraiser, can help in an even bigger way.

After the event, second graders use their math skills to count all the profits made during the Polar Ball. That includes sales from tickets and raffle baskets.
