On Jan. 19, Osborne Elementary School hosted a school dance dubbed The Polar Ball to support the local Union Aid Society. The students raised $3,945 by selling tickets to the dance, and they also sold raffle tickets for a chance to win themed baskets that were donated by the parents.
The second-grade students participate in a year-long service project that connects to their science, social studies and math curriculums. During their second-grade year, the students learn about what makes up a community and how people have needs and wants, how the economy works, and how to count money and use a budget for spending and saving. There is also a heavy emphasis on the students’ development of soft skills. The students discover they can support their community by helping others through fundraising and donating goods to those in need. They learn that kids can make a big difference in their community. Throughout the year, the second-grade students grow fresh vegetables and herbs in hydroponic gardens that are and donated to local food banks.
