Quaker Valley School District officials have approved next school year’s calendar.

It has been posted on the district’s website, qvsd.org.

The first day of school for K-9 students will be Aug. 21. Sophomores through seniors start classes Aug. 22.

Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled Nov. 25-26 followed by fall recess Nov. 27-29. Winter break is Dec. 23 through Jan. 1. Spring break is April 18-21. Prom is May 9. Quaker Valley Kennywood Day is May 26.

Graduation is June 2 and the last day of school is June 4.

The calendar was adopted at a board meeting via 8-0 vote Feb. 20.

Board member Gianni Floro was absent.

Board member Stratton Nash said it was important to finalize the dates as soon as possible so families can plan their year.

Assistant superintendent Andrew Surloff said next school year’s schedule is nearly identical to the current one with instructional days beyond state minimums.

“We align the calendar to be in compliance with our association bargaining agreements regarding days worked, holidays, and other requirements.

“We ensure we are meeting, though we are far exceeding, the (state) Department of Education requirements for days and hours. We ensure our academic terms have a similar number of school days. We pay attention to election days and other events that we may need to consider when making the calendar.

“Once drafted, we share the calendar with several stakeholder groups for feedback. From there we make a recommendation to the board for approval.”

Election day, Nov. 5, is an in-service day with no school for students.

Edgeworth and Osborne elementary schools and Quaker Valley Middle School are used for polling locations.

The board also approved updates to this school year’s staffing calendar.

District officials said the changes involve updates to in-service days. There were no changes for students and families.

Graduation this year remains May 30 with the last day of school May 31.
