In the news this week 60 years ago:

• Edgeworth Borough council approved a new zone near Beaver Road, allowing Sewickley Academy to add new athletic facilities to its campus. The proposed additions included a field house, a quarter-mile running track, a football field and a combined soccer pitch and baseball field. Bleachers and parking facilities were to round out the infrastructure.

• Thrift Drug Co., the “tenth largest drug chain in the country,” opened its newest store in the Quaker Valley Shopping Center in Leetsdale. Frank Barbuto Jr., manager of the new store, told the paper that “a staff of experienced pharmacists will be on duty at all times to compound doctors’ prescriptions carefully and accurately from a complete selection of fresh drugs, ranging from the newest miracle discoveries to the old reliable standbys.” Founded in Pittsburgh in 1935, Thrift Drug spanned six states and had 115 stores by August 1963. JCPenney bought the company in 1968, and after its purchase of Eckerd in 1997, all Western Pennsylvania Thrift Drug stores were rebranded under that name. Today, parts of the former Eckerd Corp. are owned by CVS and Rite Aid.

• Albert B. Craig of Edgeworth was honored by the Holstein-Friesian Association of America for the 19th time with its Progressive Breeders’ Award. The award was the organization’s highest recognition for Holstein breeders and involved meeting strict requirements on milk production, herd health and type improvement. The group is now known as Holstein Association USA, Inc.

• Employees of C. G. Hussey Co, then a division of Michigan-based Copper Range Co., had the opportunity to tour the company’s newest plant on Aug. 10. Hussey had invested $9 million in the area’s only copper rolling mill, with Greater Pittsburgh beating out many other offers for the company’s new location.
