In the news this week 70 years ago:

• Sewickley, Sewickley Heights and Edgeworth Borough councils all passed ordinances levying a 1% tax on earned income this week. The school boards in each community were also expected to levy a 1% tax. “The proceeds will be divided equally between the boroughs and school boards after July 1st,” the Herald reported.

• Girl Scout Cookie season hit the Valley, with Mrs. Edward Stoffer of Edgeworth being appointed chairman of the Girl Scouts’ annual cookie sale in the West Ohio Valley district. Local Girl Scouts would be taking orders from February 22 to March 13 for the three varieties then on offer: sandwich creme, chocolate mint [now known as Thin Mints], and sugar wafers.

• The Sewickley Theatre’s coming attractions included Flight to Tangier starring Joan Fontaine and Jack Palance; Back to God’s Country with Rock Hudson and Marcia Henderson; Thunder Boy with James Stewart and Joanne Dru; and It Came From Outer Space with Richard Carlson and Barbara Rush.

• Fred S. Wertenbach, formerly of Glenfield, was honored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars for his long-running Sunday Pittsburgh Press column, “News of Veterans.” Wertenbach, himself a World War I veteran, was presented with a plaque by VFW Post 166 Commander Roland F. Schmuck.
