Following a yearlong hiatus of meetings and events — save for its 100th Anniversary Celebration in May — the Sewickley Music Club is back.

The club’s 2021-22 season is a continuation of its centennial celebration, kicking off Oct. 12 with a program entitled “Elements of Doo Wop,” featuring the “DooWop Doctors” John Pastin and Al Condeluci.

Performances for the season will take place at several Sewickley churches, the Montour Heights Country Club, the Edgeworth Club and even at a Sewickley-area estate.

Performances are reserved for music club members and their invited guests. According to Suzanne Fenello, publicity director for the club, members pay a nominal yearly fee which helps defray the cost of the six performances and venue fees.

The club is always looking for new members.

“The tradition of entertainment, followed by a formal tea, was established in October 1921 by Miss Olive Nevin, a Sewickley native and founder of Sewickley Music Club,” Fenello said. “As a concert soloist herself, the purpose of the club was to bring musicians in the Quaker Valley area together to perform, as well as to learn about different musical styles, composers, dance and to socialize with other music professionals.

“The Sewickley Music Club warmly welcomes individuals from all surrounding communities, both gifted in or simply appreciative of the musical arts, for new membership.”

Performances run the gamut of musical styles – and it’s top-notch talent.

“Instrumental and vocal performers have been sought out and drawn from local and surrounding areas, as well as those who have been inducted into the Pittsburgh Music Hall of Fame, performed on Broadway, in London, Chicago and other notable cities throughout the United States and abroad,” Fenello said.

In addition to the Oct. 12 “Elements of Doo Wop” show, the 2021-22 season performances are:

Nov. 9: Cello Fury, “The Power and Passion of the Cello,” with Nicole Myers, Simon Cummings and Cecelia Caughman

Dec. 14: Pittsburgh String Trio, “Holiday Memories,” with Younga Reitz, Joyce Wohlgemuth and Juan Jamillo

March 8: Pittsburgh Trombone Project, “Classics, Broadway & Americana,” with Kevin McManus, Jim Nova, Bob Matchett and Chris Carson

April 12: Roger Barbour Jazz Band, “An Afternoon of Music,” with Roger Barbour Band Jazz Quartet

May 11: Annual Meeting and Spring Luncheon with vocalist Katherine Soroka and pianist and Edgewood Symphony conductor Walter Morales

For more information on how to become a member, contact Suzanne Fenello at 724-316-3631 or visit the club’s Facebook page at The Sewickley Music Club.
