SMC, formerly known as The Senior Men’s Club, has rebranded itself to reflect its evolving identity. No longer limited to men, the organization now welcomes women and younger members, creating a more inclusive community.

Started in 1989 and affiliated with the Sewickley Valley YMCA, SMC continues to meet Friday mornings at the Y at 9 a.m. Coffee and donuts are available as attendees gather to hear a speaker talk about issues of local and national significance. The meetings regularly end at 11 a.m.

Along with providing an opportunity for weekly informal conversations among the attendees, SMC provides a platform for experts to share insights on their fields and their contributions to our lives in Western Pennsylvania.

Over the years, SMC has earned a reputation for having excellent entertainment and informative speakers on various topics including sports, medicine and politics, as well as other topical issues of the day.

Speakers have included: Christina Cassotis, CEO of the Pittsburgh International Airport; Sally Wiggin, WTAE TV news anchor; Bob Walk, Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club player/broadcaster; State Rep. Valerie Gaydos; Frank Gamrat/Eric Montari, Allegheny Institute of Public Policy; Lisa Sharfstein, OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute; Ashley Platt, Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office; Colleen McKelvy, Light of Life Rescue Mission; and Chuck Caputo, magician.

After the meeting, some members enjoy going to lunch at local restaurants. In addition, there is a yearly couples picnic and a Christmas luncheon that are both well attended.

Information regarding SMC and a listing of upcoming programs is available on the Sewickley YMCA web site and the SMC’s website, smensclub.org.

If you’re looking for engaging discussions and camaraderie on a Friday morning, stop by the Sewickley Valley YMCA. Socializing starts at 9 a.m. and the meeting begins at 10 a.m.
