A Shaler Area High School student allegedly assaulted a referee during an elementary school basketball game.

Shaler police are in the process of charging a juvenile after they allegedly punched a referee on March 1 during a fourth grade basketball game at Shaler Area Elementary School.

According to Lt. Josh Watkins, police likely will charge the suspect, a Shaler Area High School student, in juvenile court with “assault on a sports official,” a Class A misdemeanor, following the incident.

Bryan O’Black, the district’s superintendent, confirmed that police are investigating an incident at the elementary school and said “appropriate disciplinary measures” would be taken pending the outcome of the investigation.
