For more than 50 years, Shaler has celebrated both the Fourth of July and its residents by holding a community day. This year will be no exception.

“[Community Day] gives us a chance to come together and celebrate both our community and the Fourth of July,” said Melanie Crawford, Shaler’s clerk. “All of the activities planned for the day will take place at Kiwanis Park, which is such an important part of our community.”

Festivities will begin at noon July 4 at the Crawford Pool in Kiwanis Park, with a DJ playing music and the Shaler Shack, along with other food vendors, on hand throughout the day to feed hungry residents.

Each year, the celebration draws a crowd of more than 3,000, and with good weather, the township looks forward to an even bigger crowd this year.

Kids will have the chance to play at the playground, take a swim, and from 2-4 p.m., take a ride on a firetruck from one of the local departments.

Community tents will be set up from 6 p.m. to dusk, including tents with Pennsylvania State Representatives Lori Mizgorski and Sara Innamorato, and the Shaler North Hills Library.

The Uptown Rhythm Brass Band will take the stage at 7 p.m., and at 8 p.m., the township will hold a military recognition ceremony to recognize those currently serving or recently discharged.

Bring a blanket, because at dusk a fireworks show will be put on by Pyrotecnico.
