Logan Huwalt, a student at Baldwin Middle School, got an unforgettable civics lesson this spring.
Huwalt has been deeply involved in fundraising for epilepsy, including raising more than $23,000 at the annual Epilepsy Association gala. As a result of his advocacy, he attended a two day event with the Epilepsy Association of Central and Western Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. The first day equipped attendees with tools on how to tell their story and ask for support for their cause. The second day was spent at the capitol building in meetings with state representatives, senators and administrative staff.
Huwalt shared his story, highlighting how the association has made a significant impact on his life and why they deserve more funding.
His first meeting was with the staff of Sen. Vincent Hughes, the Democratic Chair of Appropriations. The second meeting was with Rep. Seth Grove, House of Representatives Appropriation Committee Chairman. They listened to Huwalt’s story and discussed his advocacy efforts. Grove even offered to show Huwalt the House Floor. It made an indelible mark on him to see where the 253 representatives assemble and work for the commonwealth.
