An Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge on Thursday denied bond for a local teacher and youth sports coach charged in connection with seven separate cases of sexually assaulting children.
Eric Vincent Fairman, 26, of Pleasant Hills, had a bond hearing on Wednesday before Judge Edward J. Borkowski asking that he be granted bond and released on electronic home monitoring.
After taking the issue under advisement, Borkowski, on Thursday, denied the request and ordered that Fairman undergo a behavior clinic evaluation at the Allegheny County Jail.
Deputy District Attorney Jennifer DiGiovanni told the court during the hearing that there are about a dozen other ongoing investigations involving Fairman and that she anticipates the filing of more counts against him.
Fairman was initially charged on Sept. 1 with multiple counts of indecent assault, unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of minors and criminal communications for incidents involving at least four boys.
Then, this week, he was charged with additional counts involving three more children.
Fairman was a middle school math teacher at McKeesport Area School District until his resignation the day before charges were announced.
In addition, he coached girls basketball at Thomas Jefferson High School, where he was previously a substitute teacher, and varsity baseball at Keystone Oaks, where he was hired in December.
Defense attorney Charles Porter argued to the court on Wednesday that his client voluntarily turned himself in.
“He’s not a flight risk,” Porter said. “He’s presumed to be innocent.”
Porter said that there are conditions that could be met to ensure the safety of the community, while also allowing his client to be released from jail, where he has been held since his arrest.
DiGiovanni argued, though, that all of the alleged victims in the case live in the area around the defendant, and that their families are apprehensive about having Fairman in the neighborhood.
Allegheny County Police announced the charges just two days after the abuse allegations were reported to Jefferson Hills Police.
The alleged victims ranged in age from 10 to 12 at the time of the abuse, police said. According to the initial criminal complaint, the abuse occurred in the children’s homes and at Fairman’s house.
The boys told police that Fairman touched them inappropriately, sent text messages to them and in some cases said that he loved and missed them.
Fairman is scheduled for preliminary hearings in the cases on Sept. 14 and Sept. 21.
Anyone with information about Fairman is asked to call the county police tip line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS (1-833-255-8477.)
