Basketball Free Throw Competition
The West Jefferson Hills Council of the Knights of Columbus is holding its annual Basketball Free Throw Competition for boys and girls aged 9-14 years old (age as of Jan.1, 2023) on Feb. 7 at the Pleasant Hills Middle School gym from 6-7:30 p.m. Competing in the Council Level Free Throw Competition requires each participant to take 15 free throw shots. The boy and girl participant in each boy and girl age group who makes the most free throw shots wins the competition. Each winner in the Council Level of competition receives a trophy and all participants receive a participation certificate. There is no cost for participation. Winners at this Council Level of competition will advance to the District Level of competition to be held at the Pleasant Hills Middle School gym immediately following the Council Level of competition, from 7:30-9 p.m. Winners of the District Level of competition will compete to become eligible for the Regional Level of competition and then the State Level of competition, with the Regional Level to be held in early March. Pleasant Hills Lions Club
Pleasant Hills Lions’ Club 2023 speaker series takes place at the Pleasant Hills Borough Building. The events are free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.
The speaker on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. is Virginia Montanez, a Pittsburgh-based writer, columnist, essayist and blogger who is hearing impaired. She recently participated in a NASA program that invited digital creators to cover the Artemis I mission on their social media platforms. She is currently working on a project called Pittsburgh remains to be seen, which is focused on historical artifacts that can be found throughout the city.
At 7 p.m. March 15, Nathan Ruggles, an award-winning audio describer, will speak. Through his work at Prime Stage Theater, he has been recognized for continued efforts to develop and present audio-described performances that bring literature to life for visually impaired audiences in the area.
Blood drive
Our Lady of Hope Parish will hold a blood drive from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 18. at St. Valenetine’s Frawley Hall, 2700 Ohio St. in Bethel Park. AARP tax aide
Pleasant Hills Library staff is currently taking appointments for the AARP tax aid volunteers’ location at Pius Hall near St. Elizabeth Church. The tax aide site will run from Feb. 2-April 13 on Thursday afternoons by appointment only. Tax aid volunteers can only do simple tax returns. They are not able to do returns with rental property income, for small businesses, military returns or other more complicated returns. For more information or to schedule, call 412-655-2424.
Pleasant Hills Garden Club
The garden club will host an indoor herb garden program at 13:30 p.m. Feb. 13. Colleen McInerney of Gardens of Love will speak in the community room of the municipal building, 410 E. Bruceton Road.
South Hills Women’s Club
