Author talk

Pittsburgh Rising: From Frontier City to Steel City, 1750-1920 will take place at 1 p.m. Dec. 6. Over 170 years, Pittsburgh rose from a remote outpost to an industrial powerhouse. As the city blossomed into a center of industry, it generated great wealth for industrial and banking leaders. However, not everyone shared in the rewards of growth: immigrants and migrants labored under insecure, poorly paid, and dangerous conditions.

In their new book, historians Edward K. Muller and Rob Ruck trace the lives of individuals and families who worked in the early industrial city and lived in unhealthy housing in overcrowded neighborhoods near the mills. The authors also explore how divisions along class, religious, ethnic, and racial lines weakened the efforts to improve the inequalities of early 20th-century Pittsburgh — and persist today.

Refreshments will be served. Copies of the book will be available for sale by University of Pittsburgh Press. The event is free but registration is required. To register, visit whitehallpubliclibrary.org or call 412-882-6622.

Bethel Art Guild

The Bethel Art Guild will host local artist Larry Branstetter at the Dec. 7 meeting at the Bethel Park Community Center. Branstetter is a 1972 graduate of Pittsburgh’s Ivy School of Professional Art. His style is whimsical and fun, colorful and waggish. After a 30-plus-year hiatus to run his own business, he is back to his art in his retirement years. Since 2016, when he re-entered the art community, he has won more than 50 awards.

Whitehall Historical Society

The next meeting will be Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the Whitehall Borough Building.

On Jan. 25, a program featuring Tom McMillan, author of “Our Flag Was Still There.” He will discuss Fort McHenry.

On April 25, executive director of the Veterans Breakfast Club Todd DePastino will talk about World War II sabotage.
