Rotary Club of Pleasant Hills donates to local organizations

The Rotary Club of Pleasant Hills distributed financial donations to several vital local organizations. Beneficiaries of this year’s contributions include South Hills Interfaith Movement, Meals on Wheels, The Blessing Board and several local food pantries. The donations are part of the Rotary Club’s ongoing mission to strengthen community welfare through partnerships and philanthropy.

“This is what Rotary is all about — serving our neighbors and making a tangible difference,” said Cindy Weiss, president-elect of the club.

Jefferson Hills board vacancies

There are still open seats on some Jefferson Hills boards and commissions:

• One board of library directors seat for the remainder of a term expiring Dec. 31, 2025

• One board of library directors seat for a three-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2027

• Three Economic Development Commission seats for a one-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2025

• Four Economic Development Commission seats for a two-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2026

• One West Elizabeth Sewage Authority (WESA) seat for a five-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2029

• One Zoning Hearing Board alternate seat for a three-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2027

Interested individuals must be Jefferson Hills residents and submit a letter of interest to borough manager Mike Glister by emailing mglister@jeffersonhills.net by Feb. 4.

Sip & Paint

There will be a Valentine’s Day-themed Sip & Paint at the Baldwin Township Municipal Building, 10 Community Park Drive, from 5-7 p.m. Feb. 8. The $50 ticket includes two chocolate-covered strawberries, two canvasses and two sets of painting supplies. The event is for those who are 21 or over and is BYOB. Reserve your spot by Feb. 1 by emailing stephanie.yagatich@baldwintownship.com.

Elm Leaf Park pavilion reservations

Reservations for the Elm Leaf Park pavilion in Baldwin Borough will open on Feb. 1.

Reservations are only open to borough residents. The pavilion is available to rent on Saturdays and Sundays from the first weekend of May until the last weekend of September (weekday use is on a first-come, first-serve basis). Cost is $200 due at the time of reservation ($100 rental fee and $100 refundable deposit). Rental includes the use of the upper pavilion, playground area, horseshoe pits and bathrooms. The pavilion is equipped with electricity and a charcoal grill. There are six picnic tables.

Comedy fundraiser

Whitehall Borough Recreation is hosting a Funny Fundraiser on Feb. 15 at Salvatore’s, 5001 Curry Road. Tickets are $60 and include a dinner buffet, beer and comedy show with Steve Hofstetter, Chris Nakis and David Kaye. There will also be door prizes, a 50/50 raffle and a gift basket auction. Pleasant Hills vacancies

The Borough of Pleasant Hills is seeking applications to fill vacancies on the Pleasant Hills Authority Board, Employee Pension Board, Educational Service Agency and Vacancy Board Chairman.

Letters of interest should be sent to the attention of borough manager Kelly Theiss via mail to 275 Curry Hollow Road, Suite 220, Pittsburgh, PA 15236, or emailed to kelly.theiss@pleasanthillspa.com.

Letters can also be dropped off Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the administration department.

Please mark the outside of the envelope “LETTERS OF INTEREST.” All interested candidates must reside in the Borough of Pleasant Hills.

Scholarship benefit lunch

The Pittsburgh Alumnae Panhellenic, a chapter of the National Panhellenic Conference, will hold its annual scholarship benefit luncheon on March 29 at South Hills Country Club.

For the past 108 years, the event has raised funds to support local collegiate members in their academic pursuits. The 2025 event will include a fashion show featuring styles from Vintage Grace Boutique as well as a cash bar and raffle auction.

Sorority women, as well as their friends, are encouraged to attend to support these efforts. The event will begin at 11 am.

Advance ticket purchase, no later than March 15, is required. The cost is $55 for adults, $35 for collegians and $20 for children. Reservations can be made by contacting benefit chair Catherine at papbenefit@gmail.com.

Whitehall Borough Historical Society

Now in its fourth year, the Whitehall Borough Historical Society is holding a lecture on the Underground Railroad in Western Pennsylvania by Whitehall’s own William Switala on Feb. 27. Next, on April 24, will be Jon-Eric Gilot, a writer with the Emerging Civil War Series Speakers Bureau, who will present his book “John Brown’s Raid in 1859 on Harper’s Ferry.” This fall, in anticipation of the nation’s upcoming semi quincentennial (250 years since the Declaration of Independence), Brian Reedy, chief of interpretation and site manager at Fort Necessity, will speak on Sept. 25 on the precursor to the Revolutionary War, the French and Indian War in Western Pennsylvania. Finally, on Oct. 23 for the Society’s Annual Membership Meeting, Tom McMillan, noted area public historian, will return to speak about his book set to publish in April, “1776 The Year That Made America.” All lectures begin at 7 p.m. in Whitehall Public Library’s Community Room. Register for these programs at whitehallpubliclibrary.org beginning the first of each month a lecture will be held.

The society welcomes donations and loans of local historical material for displays and archives. Sales of the old brown borough street signs have gone very well with still some remaining for purchase. We continue to increase our membership, which is vital to the continuation of our activities. Annual membership fees are $10 for individuals, $20 for households and $50 for businessesorganizations.

South Hills Coin Club

The South Hills Coin Club will hold its 65th anniversary coin show on Feb. 1 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Crown Plaza Hotel Pittsburgh South 164 Fort Couch Road in Bethel Park, directly across from South Hills Village. The monthly meeting of the South Hills Coin Club will be held Feb. 11 7:30 p.m. at the Bethel Park Municipal Building, 5100 West Library Ave. All members and the general public are invited. A 50/50 will be offered and children’s prizes to be awarded. This month’s program will be “1933 gold confiscation.” Applications are now being accepted for membership. Pleasant Hills stabbing

A woman was hospitalized in critical, but stable condition and a man was arrested in connection with a stabbing in Pleasant Hills.

Allegheny County Police said officers were dispatched around 7 a.m. Jan. 3 for a reported stabbing along the 200 block of Hillock Lane.

First responders found a woman suffering from multiple stab wounds.

A 78-year-old man was taken into custody at the scene.

Police said detectives are working with the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office to determine charges. No further information was released. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the County Police Tip Line 833-ALL-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous.

Heating assistance available

Peoples Natural Gas encourages its customers to take advantage of available resources to help offset winter heating costs.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), is now open. LIHEAP is a federally funded assistance program that provides grants to eligible low-income households to help pay for heating costs. Grants start at $200 and may be higher based on income and the number of people living in the home.

To qualify for a LIHEAP grant, customers must have a total gross household income at or below 150% of the federal poverty level. Customers do not have to be on public assistance or have an unpaid heating bill. LIHEAP is open to renters and homeowners. Anti-litter award program offered

Environmental nonprofit Keep America Beautiful is seeking entries from children in kindergarten through sixth grade for its Litter Hawk Youth Award Program.

Children are asked to complete a project sharing their hope, optimism and concerns about litter and inspire others through art, words or video.

The theme for the contest is “Join the Greatest American Cleanup! Show us how you can keep your community litter-free for America’s 250th birthday.”

Children in kindergarten through grade 4 can create a poster; those in grade 5 are asked to write an essay; and those in grade 6 can create a video.
