The program “Edible Flowers” will be presented by Denise Schreiber. The PHGC always welcomes new members and non-members are welcome to attend.

The club’s annual plant sale is scheduled from 1-3 p.m. May 14 at Mowry Park at the large pavilion in Pleasant Hills. If you have perennials or seedlings you would like to donate to the plant sale, email pleasanthills gc@gmail.com.

Athletic association awarded $100K grant

The Greater Baldwin Whitehall Athletic Association has been awarded $100,000 through a state grant program to build a multi-use, indoor practice building.

“This investment will benefit thousands of young athletes in our area,” said State Rep. Nick Pisciottano. “I’m very proud that this new building will create opportunities for local kids to develop important life skills through sports programs.”

The GBWAA currently serves more than 1,500 children, ages 4-to-18, in the Baldwin-Whitehall area, primarily focusing on baseball and softball.

Jesse J. Siefert, president of the GBWAA, specified that the new, indoor facility will also include spaces for “basketball and team building activities” year-round.

The funds are sourced from a Department of Community and Economic Development grant program.

Baldwin Public Library welcomes author

The Baldwin Borough Public Library will welcome Lisa Fipps, award-winning author of the middle-grade novel, “Starfish,” on April 5 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at its Starfish and Starbucks library event.

In-library activities include a starfish string-art project, led by Baldwin Borough artist Michelle Kirk, as well as a “Starfish” book discussion while enjoying a Starbucks coffee/snack bar from 5:30-6:30 p.m., followed by a virtual visit with Fipps from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Registrants can also choose to join in the virtual author visit portion of the program from home.

Fipps is an award-winning former journalist, current director of marketing for a public library, and author of “Starfish,” her debut novel. Among many awards, “Starfish” was named a 2022 Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature Honor Book.
