Pittsburgh police are investigating a stabbing Friday evening in the city’s Stanton Heights neighborhood that sent a man to the hospital in critical condition.

Officers from the department’s Zone 5 found the man on the sidewalk with a wound to his upper left arm when they responded to reports of a stabbing shortly before 6:30 p.m. at Woodbine Street and Stanton Terrace.

Police applied a tourniquet to his arm until medics arrived and took the man to the hospital.

The man’s condition was listed as stable after he was taken into surgery, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety.

Police said they learned from witnesses that, before the stabbing, the wounded man was involved in an altercation with another man who was known to him.

The city’s mobile crime unit was called to process evidence at the scene.

Additional details weren’t immediately available.
