An armed man who fought with Brentwood police as they tried to arrest him Wednesday afternoon was fatally shot by a police officer, Allegheny County Police said.

The victim, who was not immediately identified, died in a hospital after being shot multiple times by an unidentified Brentwood police officer, Allegheny County Police said.

County police said that the man was shot after failing to stop for pursuing police officers.

The pursuit had begun at about 5 p.m. when an Allegheny County Police officer saw the stolen vehicle traveling on Brownsville Road in South Park. The officer attempted a traffic stop and the vehicle, a black Nissan Rouge, initially stopped before fleeing.

Moments later officers stopped following the vehicle and terminated the attempted traffic stop, police said.

Brentwood police saw the stolen car on Route 51 and the suspect rammed a Brentwood police cruiser during the chase along Laveton Road at about 5:05 p.m., Allegheny County police said.

The man fled the vehicle along Check Way about three minutes later and a brief pursuit ensued. A Brentwood officer said he saw the suspect’s weapon and fired multiple shots at him, county police said.

County police said earlier that the shooting occurred in the 100 block of Hillson Avenue.

Neighbors told WTAE-TV that they saw a black car speeding up Hillson, followed by at least one police cruiser, and the black car ended up in an alley behind a house.

Neighbors said they heard what sounded like about four gunshots. Investigator appeared to focus on that area, which authorities blocked off with yellow police tape.

Allegheny County Police Department Homicide Unit and detectives are investigating.

Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call the County Police Tip Line 1-833-ALL-TIPS (1-833-255-8477). Callers can remain anonymous.
