An Upper St. Clair man died Sunday after being shot by police who were responding to a domestic incident at his home.

Police were dispatched to the residence of Christopher L. Shepherd, 48, in the 100 block of Lamar Road shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday, according to Allegheny County Police.

After consulting with one of the man’s family members and Allegheny County Mental Health workers, officers attempted to take the man into custody with an involuntary commitment order. At that point, the man brandished a knife and threatened the officers, county police said.

The officers formed a perimeter around the residence and requested assistance from South Hills Area Council of Government’s Crisis Intervention Response Team.

The man exited the residence around 8:40 p.m., holding a knife.

Allegheny County Police Superintendent Christopher Kearns said, “He refused their commands, continued approaching officers with a knife in his hand, and several of the officers ended up firing at the subject.”

County detectives and homicide unit officers are investigating the incident.

Anyone with information on the incident can call the County Police Tip Line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS (255-8477).
