Two cars collided Sunday afternoon outside the parking lot of the Golden Dawn supermarket in New Kensington, leaving one driver with a headache and both vehicles needing to be towed.

The accident occurred about 1:52 p.m. at Camp Avenue and Freeport Road.

Early indications were that a black Dodge Nitro was headed west on Camp toward the grocery store while the other vehicle, a blue Ford Escape, was going south on Freeport.

At some point, the vehicles struck each other. The Ford swerved into a signpost, fence and low retaining wall at the corner of the intersection, New Kensington police Officer Alan Zulka said.

“I think he tried to avoid something,” Zulka said.

The Ford’s driver, described by Zulka as an older gentleman, and his passengers, two girls ages 15 and 17, were already out of their vehicle when police arrived.

The man was taken to Allegheny Valley Hospital for evaluation.

Police on the scene did not have information about the occupants of the other vehicle or the nature or extent of any injuries.

Officers were investigating why the driver swerved, who was at fault and who had the right of way at the intersection, which has lights governing traffic on both Camp and Freeport.

It took about an hour to clear the scene. The Dodge was towed first, but a flatbed truck had to be summoned to move the Ford. Its hood was crumpled, left front tire deflated and sitting on the rim, and its front left fender peeled back.
