Two people were taken to a hospital following a four-vehicle crash that shut down Greensburg Road for nearly two hours in Washington Township on Thursday morning.

Washington Township police were dispatched to Greensburg Road near its intersection with Saddle Pack Trail, Chief Jason Montgomery said.

A vehicle turning west onto Greensburg Road from Saddle Pack Trail pulled in front of a second vehicle, Montgomery said. After that collision, a third vehicle hit the rear of the second vehicle.

The impact of that collision caused the third vehicle to tip over onto a fourth vehicle, he said.

Minimal damage was done to the fourth vehicle, but the first three were badly damaged and towed. Two women were taken to Forbes Hospital by Murrysville Medic One with what appeared to be moderate injuries.

Both women were able to hold a conversation with police, Montgomery said, but one developed chest discomfort shortly before being transported to the hospital.

“It definitely could have been a whole lot worse,” Montgomery said. “Everyone is extremely lucky it turned out the way it did.”

The scene was cleared and Greensburg Road reopened around 8:40 a.m., Montgomery said. Washington Township and Sardis volunteer fire companies were among the other emergency crews at the scene.
