An Arnold man is accused of threatening and fighting with New Kensington police after he was arrested for allegedly terrorizing a family in their home in the middle of the night.

New Kensington police filed charges, including felony counts of aggravated assault and criminal trespass, Thursday against Timothy Jamar Petty, 25.

Officers responded about 2:15 a.m. to the 600 block of Fifth Street Extension, where they found a man kicking the front door to an apartment, according to a criminal complaint filed by police.

A relative of the family that lives there called for help. The family was so worried and distressed that they stuck chairs in front of the door to try to reinforce it, police said.

The caller said the family members, who do not speak English, had never seen the man before. Police said the family was visibly shaking.

When the man kicking the door saw officers arrive, he began to leave, police said in the complaint. Petty refused to identify himself, saying he did nothing wrong and didn’t have to talk to them.

Petty was carrying a Social Security card with another man’s name on it and was visibly intoxicated, police said. After being taken into custody, he was screaming and yelling at officers and “passively resisting,” requiring an officer to help him into a patrol car, according to authorities.

At the station, police said, Petty continued to passively resist and refused to take off certain clothing items. He continued to refuse to identify himself and threatened officers multiple times during the booking process, the complaint states.

When officers were walking Petty to a cell, police said he began fighting with officers and had to be taken to the ground, where he continued to fight, kicking one officer in the leg. After being forced into a cell, police said, Petty began spitting on the cell and hallway floor.

In addition to the two felony counts, police charged Petty with three misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats; misdemeanor counts of institutional vandalism, obstruction and resisting arrest; and a summary count of public drunkenness.

Petty was arraigned Thursday before New Kensington District Judge Frank J. Pallone Jr. and sent to the Westmoreland County jail on $25,000 bond.

Petty’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 25.
