Giant Eagle says some of its customers who swiped a credit card at the New Kensington store in June might have fallen victim to a card skimmer.
A legal notice, published by Giant Eagle this week, states a payment card skimmer was installed on a checkout lane’s PIN pad between June 9 and June 14 at the New Kensington Giant Eagle.
Customers who used a magnetic swipe on their card might be impacted. People who inserted or tapped their cards are not affected, said Jannah Drexler, Giant Eagle spokeswoman.
Drexler said the grocery store notified potentially impacted customers, including reaching out to those it has contact information for.
Customers who believe they might be impacted should review their card statements and report anything unusual to their issuer.
Giant Eagle removed the skimmer once it was aware of it, Drexler said. It also retrained employees to identify skimmers and applied anti-tamper clips on PIN pads.
Drexler declined to say how many customers were affected. She also did not say why Giant Eagle posted the notice in August when the alleged incidents happened in June.
New Kensington Police and the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office said nothing was reported to them regarding the incident, according to Melanie Jones, spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office.
