The interior of a GardaWorld armored truck suffered severe damage during a fire Wednesday in O’Hara, but it’s unclear what, or how badly impacted, the contents were, police Chief Jay Davis said.

The incident is under investigation by the Allegheny County Fire Marshal’s Office.

Kasey Reigner, emergency services spokesperson, said the fire appears to be accidental.

“It was related to the energized electrical system routed through the dashboard area of the armored vehicle,” she said.

Emergency crews were called just before 7:40 a.m. to the parking lot of the GetGo gas station at 1081 Freeport Road.

“They pulled in and the driver and passenger both reported smoke coming from the vents, and then, fire,” Davis said.

“They exited and no one was injured.”

But the fire continued to burn and developed quickly, with flames shooting from the truck and thick black smoke billowing above. The truck was parked in the far corner of the parking lot away from the gas pumps and tanks.

Calls to GardaWorld were not immediately returned. Armored trucks typically transport money and other valuable items.

Allegheny County dispatchers said the scene was cleared about 9:50 a.m.

Crews from Blawnox, Fox Chapel, Pleasant Valley and Parkview volunteer fire departments responded.
