Demolition crews work to rip up the foundation of the former Colfax Upper Elementary School building, a longtime institution in the area, in Springdale on Wednesday, April 2.

By March 26, the remnants of the former Colfax Upper Elementary School in Springdale were razed after extensive demolition work throughout the month.

The Allegheny Valley School Board shuttered the school in 2018 after years of declining enrollment and voted to demolish the building four years later, according to the district’s website.

Colfax was built in 1925 and renovated in 1971 to make way for expanded classes and additional students. A district realignment in the late 1980s had the school hosting fourth, fifth and sixth graders, but the last of its students were moved to Acmetonia Elementary School in Harmar in 2015.

Crews are working to rip up the building’s foundation, which has placed the project three weeks behind schedule. The new completion date will likely be at the beginning of June, according to the district website.

After all debris has been removed, crews will backfill the location’s former basement.

According to Allegheny Valley Public Relations Director Jan Zastawniak, there are ideas for what to do with the land where the building sat, but no official discussions have taken place.
