Dollar General withdraws parking variance application in Plum

Dollar General has withdrawn its application for a variance related to parking spaces for a proposed new store along Saltsburg Road in Plum, according to a notice from the borough.
The borough’s zoning hearing board was scheduled to hold a hearing on the request at its meeting Wednesday, after the first scheduled hearing on the matter in January had been canceled.
The board still will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the municipal center to address other items on its agenda.
If built, the store on Saltsburg Road at Clements Road would be the third in Plum. Existing stores are at 960 Unity Center Road and 2409 Route 286.
The developer, PTV 1298 LLC, was asking for a variance to allow the store to have 35 parking spaces, 19 fewer than the 54 the borough requires.
A Dollar General spokesperson did not say if the withdrawal of the variance application means they will comply with the number of parking spaces or if the development is being called off completely.
“Dollar General continues to assess the opportunity to add a new store in Plum,” the company said by email.
Borough Manager Michael Thomas said that, at this time, they only have withdrawn the application for the variance.
“This does not mean that they are no longer pursuing the project,” he said. “They could even still resubmit for the variance.”
Dollar General has more than 18,000 stores in 47 states. In the announcement of its 2022 third-quarter results, the company said it plans to open more than 1,000 stores in its 2023 fiscal year.
