A shortened version of the Oakmont Greek Food Festival is going on this weekend.
The Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church is hosting Greek Food To-Go Saturday and Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. or while supplies last at 12 Washington Ave.
Co-chair Andy Gavrilos said they hope to generate more revenue this year after having to cut menu items and activities for the annual food festival in June due to the covid-19 pandemic.
“The church still has expenses,” he said. “We’re painting. We’re trying to improve the grounds, and obviously that takes cash. We were very fortunate (at the festival). We had a successful weekend and just thought maybe we’d do one more. People still ask us all the time if we’re going to do it again.
“We’ve never done anything in the fall. It kind of gives us a good measuring stick if we want to do something moving forward or not.”
The layout is similar to what was done in June with participants pulling into the church lot from Washington Avenue. Motorists follow traffic cones and ropes to an ordering tent with three spots.
Volunteers are wearing masks and following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. Order takers use hand-held devices to process requests and credit and debit card transactions to help people move through the line.
Cash transactions are prohibited.
There is a limited menu with the classic gyros, chicken Alexis with rice pilaf, pork souvlaki, prepackaged pastries and other goods. There are no honey balls.
However, food preparers were able to add two items since the festival. Lamb shanks and pastitso, pasta and ground beef topped with béchamel sauce.
There is no live entertainment, but traditional Greek music is played over speakers.
“I think ideally an in-person Greek Food Festival would be our first choice, but under the circumstances, not being able to gather together, this is an opportunity for us to be able to share our food and keep people safe,” said volunteer Kristin Ioannou.
