Fawn police accuse man of injuring woman in crash while driving car without title, insurance, registration
A Uzbekistani national has been ordered to stand trial, accused by Fawn police of seriously injuring a woman when he ran a stop sign and crashed into her vehicle while driving without insurance, registration or proper title.
Farkhod Akbarov, 35, of the 1000 block of Hillgate Place in Scott Township was charged with felony counts of aggravated assault by vehicle, causing an accident that caused injury or death, along with a count of reckless endangerment. He also was issued eight traffic citations in connection with the June 21 crash near the intersection of Route 908 and Lardintown Road.
Akbarov was taken into custody Aug. 6 and released from the Allegheny County Jail the following day after posting a $5,000 cash bond, according to court records.
District Judge Carolyn Bengel ordered Akbarov to stand trial in Allegheny County Court on all charges following a preliminary hearing Wednesday. Formal arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 3.
A Fawn police officer who responded to a two-vehicle crash shortly after 12:30 p.m. June 21 wrote in a criminal complaint that Akbarov and the woman driving the other vehicle refused treatment.
But after the crash, the woman’s husband took her to Allegheny Valley Hospital in Harrison for treatment. She was then transported to Allegheny General Hospital on Pittsburgh’s North Side where she was diagnosed with a brain bleed and a ruptured spleen, the complaint said.
The woman told police she was driving east along Route 908 and was unable to avoid hitting Akbarov’s Kia when he drove through the intersection with Lardintown Road and into the path of her SUV.
Investigators said data from the air bag module on the 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser the woman was driving and Akbarov’s 2017 Kia Forte showed that he caused the crash.
The Land Cruiser’s air bag data showed that the woman was going 46 mph in a 45 mph zone before braking hard 1.7 seconds before crashing into the Kia, the complaint said.
The Kia’s air bag data showed that the accelerator was being pressed by 75% one second before the crash before dropping to zero at 0.5 second before being hit by the SUV, according to the complaint.
Police said Akbarov’s Kia had a “salvage” title, which typically is issued after a vehicle is heavily damaged and the cost of repairs is greater than its value.
He also was using a license plate registered to a Toyota and was driving without insurance, police said.
Fawn Chief Tim Mayberry said he entered Akbarov’s name into the National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System, or NLETS, and found out he was living in the U.S. illegally, the complaint said.
Information from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement showed that at the time of the crash, Akbarov was in the process of being deported, according to the complaint.
Allegheny County Police and Pittsburgh police assisted Fawn with the investigation, according to authorities.
