Proposed changes to the Freeport Area School District’s meeting and public comment policies will not impact scheduling or speaking opportunities, according to school board members.

Instead, language adjustments to two policies are, in part, to reflect what is in state statutes and to codify existing meeting processes.

Board President Dan Lucovich said workshop meetings will remain the first Thursday of the month with voting sessions the second Thursday of the month.

Both are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the middle school unless otherwise noted.

Any meeting location changes are expected to be posted online as well as on the doors of the building.

Public comment on agenda items will continue to take place at the beginning of a meeting. Public comment on nonagenda items takes place at the end of a meeting.

Time is usually limited to five minutes per person and a total of 30 minutes per segment.

However, Lucovich said those limitations are rarely strictly enforced.

“I’m always pretty lenient and let people talk,” he said.

Residents and parents typically fill out public participation forms prior to speaking.

Lucovich said the district had requested such forms be submitted days prior to a meeting, but that provision was removed some time ago.

A link to those policies and more can be found in the “School Board” section of the district’s website, freeport.k12.pa.us.

The board is expected to vote on the changes at its next meeting, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at the middle school.
