Highlands administrator Michael Toole joked he hasn’t sat still for long during his eight years with the district.

He started at the high school before serving as middle school dean of students and, most recently, as assistant principal to about 625 students at the elementary school.

Last week, Toole was tapped by the board to lead the high school.

He moves to that position May 15 before the current school year closes out.

“I’m super excited for the next step and to circle back to where I started,” Toole said.

He replaces Laura Burns, who left in March after an 18-month stint.

Toole’s starting salary is $120,000 per year.

Bobbie Neese, school board president, said the district is fortunate to have an educator like Toole.

“I’m excited to see the direction of the high school under his leadership,” Neese said.

She cited his knowledge of curriculum development and implementation, his ability to recognize and meet the needs of students and staff, and his willingness to have challenging conversations about accountability and responsibility.

There are about 720 students in grades nine through 12 at the high school.

“Mr. Toole is not afraid to make tough decisions,” Neese said. “These are the characteristics that we need and should expect here at Highlands.

“I believe he is going to play a very influential role in the future of our district.”

Toole said he is thankful for the board’s vote of confidence.

He said he will miss his family of students at the elementary school but is excited for the next adventure and working with older children.

Toole’s goal, according to his district bio, is “for students to arrive each morning eager to learn and happy to see their teachers and peers.”
